Frequently Asked Questions

MDS Room App

Q: What is MDS Room App? Where can I get it?

The MDS Room is a free mobile application for Andriod and IOS users. The MDS Room is your digital companion to provide you information about lessons, homework, class schedule, online booking of makeups, payment, and exam registrations. There are also other features like our online store, school calendar, exclusive video content, recital videos, and a lot more features.

Q: Must I wear a mask?

It is not compulsory to wear a mask at MDS.

Q: What are the precautionary measures implemented at MDS?

1) Students are required to bring their own personal drumsticks. Our educators will be using their personal drumsticks as well to minimize sharing.

2) At the end of the day, our premises will be disinfected, especially for touch-points like all door handles, drum thrones. We will be cleaning using Clorox Scentiva Disinfecting Wipes.

3) All group classes will be split into individual classes. School recitals have also been postponed until further notice.

For more information, watch this video.

Q: Can I postpone my lessons indefinitely until the virus subside?

We will not be able to postpone your lessons indefinitely. We seek your understanding that operations still need to carry on as usual.

We will do our best to ensure that MDS is a safe environment for our Educators and Students to have lessons comfortably.

Q: What happens if I decide not to come for lessons? How do I go about seeking a refund?

Unfortunately, if you do not turn up for lessons, we will need to forfeit the lesson. If there are no more outstanding lessons to forfeit, your class slot will be terminated. Student Deposits will not be refunded, and all outstanding make-up lessons will be forfeited.

Please speak to our Educators to discuss your situations and let us work something together with you.

Enrolment Enquiry

Q: What is the minimum age required to enrol at MDS?

Our recommended age is 5+ onwards. From our past experiences, these are the following reasons:

1) Students need to be able to tell from Left and Right easily
2) Students need to be of certain size to reach the bass drum pedal
3) Students need the understanding of basic math like counting to 4 or playing 2 equal eighth notes at the speed of 1 quarter note
4) Students need to be able to sit down in a 30-minute class and concentrate throughout the whole lesson.

We usually find it more effective when they are at least in Kindergarten level. You can sign up for a Trial Class Here.

Q: How do I apply or enrol in a programme at MDS?

Please read our Admission Information.

Here are the steps to register with us:

Step 1) Fill our online form here.

Step 2) After submitting the form, we will reply you in two working days.

Step 3) The Customer Relations Manager will arrange a time and day for your lessons.

Step 4) Upon confirmation, an email will be sent to you. Information like fees, materials needed, make-up procedures, school address, will be included in the email.

Step 5) Based on availability, the drum class should commence within a week.

Q: How long is one session of drum class?

Each individual session lasts for either 30 minutes or 45 minutes.

For Preschool Course and Junior Courses, one parent may be allowed to sit-in for the first 10 minutes of the first few sessions to allow the child to settle down. Sessions for Junior Courses may be shorter depending on the attention of the child.

Please also see our Fee Structure.

Q: How long does it take to complete a drum programme?

Each programme consists of a few levels.

The duration for each level varies from 32 to 48 weeks (about 3 to 4 Terms).

Q: I have some drumming experience, which level do I begin?

As a rough guide, if you cannot read music notations like 8th notes, 16th notes, triplets, measures & bars, rests, tied notes…etc then you should start off at Beginner Level 1 just to work on the reading part. You will go faster than the usual pace, as you already know how to play.

If you can read those notations, we will access you on your first lesson to see where we can fit you into our programme. We have 5 different levels at My Drum School. You can see the MDS Journey here.

Q: Can lessons be postponed or make-up?
  1. A 24-hour notice to your educator is required for postponement of lesson. Otherwise, it shall be considered absent.
  2. Make-up timeslots will be mutually arranged by educator and student.
  3. Students with circumstantial reasons like hospitalization, bereavement, reservists, or major examinations, will not be required to make-up classes for a maximum of two weeks and have their fees pro-rated on a case-by-case basis.
  4. Make-up classes should be cleared within the week.
  5. Upon termination, any outstanding make-up minutes will be forfeited if not utilised by the end of the final month of lessons.

MDS Online Lessons

Q: How are online lessons different from the physical lessons in Singapore?

Our online lessons are electives targeted at helping overseas drummers, who cannot have access to our Singapore location, improve in specific concepts.

We have over 60 modules to choose from, and we are currently teaching these online lessons to students from Australia and China.

If you are residing in Singapore, you should opt for our physical classes at our 4 locations.

Q: What software do I need to prepare before lessons?

You will need to download Zoom – A video conferencing App on your mobile phone, tablet, or computer.

You will also need to download our MDS Room (Student App) by registering HERE.

Q: What is MDS Room?

MDS Room is a mobile application that can be downloaded on Android or IOS.

It is an initiative by My Drum School to enable students and parents to track your MDS lesson progress, recall your homework, and get updates on news and events.

Download MDS Room (Student App) by registering HERE.

Q: Is there a tutorial on how to set up my ZOOM?

We have created a guide for IOS/Andriod/Computer users. Please download the PDF Guide Here.

Q: What do I need to prepare before my lesson? How do I set up my device?

We have created a video tutorial to provide you with more information on how to set up your device. You can watch the video here.

Q: Where can I find the Meeting ID and Password in the Zoom App?

The Meeting ID and Password will be pushed to the student via the MDS ROOM only at the start of the lesson when the educator opens a zoom session.

Every session is closed after lessons. We do not generate the same Meeting ID and Password. Thus, we never give out the personal ID of the Host.

Q: Is Zoom Video Conferencing secure?

Some main differences that make MDS more secure:
All our Zoom online classes are One-On-One Meetings. We only use Password-protected sessions. Zoombombing usually gets undetected in a group session, but in our case it’s very obvious when a third party joins.

Every session is closed after lessons. We do not generate the same Meeting ID and Password. Thus, we never give out the personal ID of the Host. This makes every session unique which is harder for the hackers to hack into.

We send the Zoom Login Details via the MDS Room Student App. We highly recommend you to register and download it instead of requesting the details to be sent via WhatsApp.

Q: What happens if I do not have a drum set at home?

Our Online Electives are designed specially for MDS students in such situations. All you need is a practice pad, or just grab a pillow!

Here is a Video Tutorial to teach you how to set up a home drum kit.

Handouts can be downloaded from MDS Room.

Q: Is there a hotline for technical support?

You can WhatsApp us at 8799 9779 or call 3129 8126 (during weekdays 9-5pm) and we will assist you in setting up your video call.

Q: Am I getting the same value as physical lessons?

Online Lessons, in general, have its limitations. These include latency and connection issues, limited views, and the absence of playing concurrently.

That being said, we are not compromising on our quality. We have a designed an online curriculum to minimize the need for high latency. These online elective modules specifically aim to help students achieve better stick control, technique, timing, and dynamics.

All exercises include audio files (3 different tempos) for students to use offline. This will reinforce the clarity of the exercises taught during class as students can revisit them via the Student App.

On top of everything, we have come up with many Guides and Videos to assist students in optimizing their online experience. We have also trained our educators to use the necessary equipment for effective online classes as we believe it will benefit our students.

Q: Is it possible to learn online without a drum set?

Short-term = Yes and Long-term = No.

All exercises come with downloadable audio tracks and many video play-alongs.

Even without the drum set, we believe there’s a lot of learning that can be done, if not more in some aspects. However, we understand the limitations and will have to work around it during this difficult season. It’s really a time where we can focus on developing other aspects of playing, rather than neglecting it for this period and getting rusty.

For MDS Online Elective Courses, these are designed for the short term. The materials also include downloadable PDF and audio files for all drum exercises. Upon completion of these short online courses, we encourage all online students to continue learning drums at one of our locations in Singapore to enjoy the full MDS Experience.

Course Enquiry

Q: Should I choose 30 minutes or 45 minutes?

Generally, 30 minutes are for the younger students enrolled in our Preschool Programme or Junior Programme and usually for those who are on a budget.

A 45-minute class would mean more hands-on time and less hurry.
Most adults choose to have 45 minutes for their lessons.

Q: I have no music background, can I still learn drums?

No worries about the musical background.

In fact most of our new students begin with no music background. With our customized syllabus, you will be learning all the fundamentals in no time.

Q: How often are the drum courses conducted?

Students will be scheduled weekly sessions in order to facilitate effective learning at MDS. We also offer group classes for students at Beginner and Intermediate Courses.

We do have students who come for a series of intensive sessions given their limited schedule. Do visit our Holiday Programme and we will work something out with you. Such cases involved: Holiday visit to Singapore, Summer Vacation, Waiting to be enlisted, Waiting for results.

Please see our Programmes at MDS for more information on the courses we are offering.

Q: How do I know if I can play the drums?

Learning how to play the drums is actually much easier than most people believe. In fact, if you can count to four – you have what it takes to play a simple rock groove. It is about being able to coordinate and multi-task well.

Can you swim? Can you drive? Can you type quickly? You can drum!

Moreover, drumming is one of the easiest instruments to learn when it comes to reading music notations. Don’t be afraid of the theory part! It is our job to ensure that you understand and master them well.

Q: Is it too difficult for my child of 6 years old to learn drumming?

Most often it is easier to teach the children than teenagers, though some believe that children do not learn music as easily and that you need to spend much time to teach them. In fact, this is our problem as teachers if we are not able to communicate with them and understand their world.

At MDS, we have vast experience in dealing with young children through our programmes with Pat’s Schoolhouse. Our Junior Courses are designed to bring fun and fundamentals to the children, educating them how to count beats, understand rhythm, keep time and get tuned in to playing basic drum beats.

Q: Am I too "old" to learn drumming?

The truth is, the older we are, the more mature we get. We should be able to understand math better than a child. We should be able to analyse better, innovate better and be more disciplined when it comes to practising!

However, the reason why children tend to be better at drumming is because they have time to practise, and they love it!

That’s the main question to ask. Are you too “old” to find time to practise? At MDS, we have enrolled students that are in their 70s and they are progressing well from level to level. Even James Pang, our Founder, started drumming at a late age of 17 years old!

So fret not. Get started today!

We have a full product listing in our Student App (MDS Room), which is free to download upon enrolment at our school.

Q: Do I have to purchase a drum set in order to learn?

Having a drum set would be beneficial for practising. However, we generally do not encourage our junior and beginner students to purchase drum sets until they are able to control and develop proper sticking techniques.

At MDS, we educate our students to practise effectively even without a drum set. Techniques like coordination, sticking, tempo, rhythm control, grooves, rudiments do not require a drum set at all. The student is only required to purchase a pair of drumsticks and a practice pad.

Q: I want to purchase a drum set. Do you sell drums? Any discounts?

Yes we do sell Roland Electronic Drumsets with MDS Student discounts. Please WhatsApp us at 8799 9779 or call 3129 8126 for product enquiries.

Other Enquiries

Q: Why can't I just learn drumming by reading materials myself?

Receiving lessons is a great way to boost your learning. Having a professional to be able to examine your bad habits, and point out your mistakes is something you cannot get from videos and online web sites.

The first attempt at a new skill is most important because you are forging a new pathway. Every time you let yourself practise something incorrectly, you are getting better at practising it incorrectly. Start your journey with MDS today.

Q: Is it true that drumming is therapeutic?

Yes. Drumming is therapeutic and is an expressive outlet that coordinates the physical, mental, emotional (and spiritual) aspects of a person. Researches have shown that drumming reduces stress, frustration, anxiety, and worry. Hitting a drum keeps us in the present moment, thereby eliminating anxiety about the future and worry about the past.

At MDS, our Beginner Courses are a good platform to help you get started on this journey. This course develops your understanding of essential drumming concepts and builds the foundations of excellence in your drum playing.

Learn drumming the right way!
